There was a time in my life, many many years ago, when I took a LOT of crap from a LOT of people. I was afraid of standing up for myself, afraid of getting hurt, afraid of being alone... just generally afraid of the world. It was a horrible existence. Eventually I learned how to conquer my fears and to stand up for myself, my loved ones, and for those who cannot defend themselves. This week I stood up to a VERY prominent person who questioned my integrity in a public forum, and the way I did so rubbed a few people the wrong way. I lost a few FB friends in the process, and I suspect Ill lose even more before its all said and done. Its funny, because I can easily recall a scared young man who wouldve been emotionally devastated by being Unfriended, particularly by someone he actually respected. But now, 25 years later, Ive come to accept that its just the cost of standing up for what you believe in and not backing down from confrontation. I am more loyal than a dog when it comes to people who treat me well, but Im way too old to put up with other peoples crap, especially when it comes to our business. In the end, I reflect on something Chris Rock told me, during a discussion of controversy in comedy. He said, If you aint pissing somebody off, youre doing it wrong. So Im gonna flip it and assume Im finally doing it right. Heres to more good things to come!
