There was a time, just barely within living memory, when most people on Earth were born, grew up, lived most of their lives, died & were buried within walking distance of the same place. The worldwide spread of low-cost ocean passenger liner service, followed by construction of rail networks in all but about two dozen* out of some 200 countries, expanded and improved roads and finally, cheap air travel, now ostensibly allow people to relocate almost at will. But, before the dramatic reduction in long-distance travel costs that reduced intercontinental travel costs between 1950 and 1990, intercontinental migration was, in one sense, a simpler proposition. Emigrants left; said goodbye; and didnt expect to return, usually. This picture essay reflects how arbitrary, capricious and harsh bureaucratic barriers now discourage emigration more than the deadly risks of travel formerly did; and how the cultural dislocation of moving, and moving again, may cause more anguish now than did the one move and youre done process of previous centuries.
