There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. - Matthew 28:2-3 The two Marys were bringing sweet spices to anoint the body of Jesus when a violent earthquake shook the area causing the stone to roll away from the entrance to the tomb. This event along with the appearance of an angel of the Lord caused the guards to shake and collapse "...like dead men." The angel tells the two Marys not to fear and stated, "He is not here for He is risen as He said. Come see where the Lord lay. Go quickly and tell His disciples He is risen from the dead." Meditation: the stone was not rolled back to let Jesus out for He had already risen...the stone was rolled back to show the two Marys and the guards that the tomb was empty...that the Lord had risen! The unique fact of the gospel IS the resurrection. If this event had never happened, then Jesus would have just been another powerful prophet. Friends, before any individual attempts to go into the world and witness, they must first have an unshakable conviction of the truth of the resurrection. They must for themselves view the empty tomb and understand the legitimacy of the resurrection. Then and only then will you be able to go into the world and tell of the teachings of the resurrected Savior. Praise the Lord!!
