There was lots of mooing going on at Bladenboro Primary School recently in celebration of World School Milk Day. Child Nutrition staff at the school dressed up as cows to emphasize the benefits of milk. World School Milk Day is organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and this year will be celebrating its 15th annual event. The last Wednesday in September is designated as World Milk Day. So if you happened to stop by Bladenboro Primary School on Wednesday, September 24 your eyes were not deceiving you – those were in fact cafeteria ladies dressed up as cows! Since holding the first World School Milk Day celebrations in 2000, it has been recognized and honored by over 30 different countries all over the world. The day continues to successfully promote the importance of drinking milk at school to children, in a fun, memorable and educational way. The Department for Education recently published its new School Food Standards and School Food Plan, which states that low fat milk must be available for drinking at least once a day during school hours. Due to come into effect in January 2015, it aims to help children develop healthy eating habits by ensuring they get the energy and nutrition needed for a whole school day.
