There was once a time when Dorothy Martinez couldn’t let her children walk to school alone, she said. When she first moved to Denton about 45 years ago, she said because her children were Hispanic, they were mistreated, roughed up and left with their clothes dirtied by other children. Talks with school administrators and local police went nowhere, she said. “That incident made me change who I was going to become,” Martinez said.
