There was to be no review today because my intention was to nip to Mayfair Cafe for a quick repeat of yesterday - the chicken mayonnaise with chunky peri-peri on homemade. It was on the specials board but I made the mistake of looking at the specials menu as well. Now before I get accused of having shares in this business I better declare this to be my last review of Mayfair Cafe this week. On the specials menu was a home-made beef burger with cheese and a fried egg. Now I am not a great burger eater, and my jaundiced view of burgers has come about by a proliferation of franchise burger outlets where the meals come off an assembly line and well, taste pretty ordinary. I have tried a burger at Stella Astro which was amazing. So, I thought let me try this one. You get a clue that the beef will be of a high standard when you are asked how you want your meat done? I am an underdone meat eater but certainly would not try that in any burger joint. Well here the meat was beautifully done medium rare and was tasty and quite frankly equal to any I have tasted. Plenty of melted cheese, a soft fried egg all on half a soft roll and a large portion of chips. Another test for me is what goes on the other half of the roll. I have left plenty of half rolls in my time. This one had fresh lettuce and thinly cut tomatoes that saw me actually include that in the meal. To arrive somewhere with your mind set on a specific meal and then the surprise of getting to eat something different is great. I certainly could become a big burger fan if they are cooked and prepared like this. It was only after I had finished that Dean let on that his chef is off sick today so he is holding the fort, front of house and the kitchen. Without saying something that would see me fall out with such a talented and dedicated chef when he gets back tomorrow, let me just say that the super sub, Dean did a sterling job. Well as promised that is my last Mayfair Cafe review for a while. That does not mean that I wont sneak in there for the odd breakfast or lunch from time to time. I love the place. As if you didnt already know that.
