There were 5 general provisions guaranteed to federally recognized tribes when treaties were signed in the 1860s - tribal sovereignty, self-determination, health care (Indian Health Services), education (Bureau of Indian Education and food (commodity foods loaded with high fat and sodium). Prior to the reservation systems, we hunted and farmed our food. With diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease sky rocketing among the Native population, we have one more enemy on the horizon - genetically modified foods (made by Monsanto) made to deter insects so that we can eat perfect looking produce. We have become accustomed to consuming perfect looking fruits and vegetables that have been drenched in pesticides and Roundup. Traditional Diné corn will have a few worms and the kernals do not appear perfect like the corn grown in the midwest. Our traditional corn is perfect just as it is. If the produce is intended to kill off insects, then it is not good for us either. We must know our gardens and we must know where our food derives from. If the food has a commercial, then there is a BIG business propheting from poisoning us. Please grow a garden using organic seeds. Avoid foods that have a commercial attached to it. Our heirloom seeds provided to us as we entered the Glittering World is what we must return to.
