There were many attempts to lure and convert Mahatma Gandhi and Swamy Vivekananda to Christianity during their time! Both had read the Bible, and were full of praise for the Prophet Christ and his teachings but never accepted him as the only God who can save humanity nor subscribe to the vicarious atonement of original sin! Vivekananda was categorical when he said if someone innocent comes to me and says he will bear all my sins and wash them with his blood, I will tell him brother I am not a coward not to bear my sins and if have to be eternally barbecued for it, I shall accept it, rather than having someone innocent die for it. What a man; what words. Similarly there were many attempts to convert Gandhi and make him accept that his Sathyagraha and Ahimsa were based on Bible! Christian missionaries had been propagating that the Reform Movement in Hinduism as well as Gandhijis doctrine of satyagraha where influenced by the principles of Christianity. The proposition was presented to Gandhiji by Rev. Wells Branch in the latters letter dated May 9, 1919. He wrote back on May 12 that “I do not think either has anything to do with Christian teaching.” He held modern civilisation and modern education as responsible for the Reform Movement. As to satyagraha, he said that it is an extended application of the ancient teaching.- The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, Volume 39, New Delhi. Truth can be arrived only if you look for it! Many times it is elusive and everything which comes your way is not the truth. In Christianity they do not give importance to TRUTH- Ten commandments do not have a verse on truth, so much so some Christians only lie to establish that Vivekananda, Gandhiji, Kannadasan etc were converted Christians! Hindus must read the writings of all three and understand that they all had the highest respect for Christ but rejected Christianity!
