There were noisy applause, big words and long speech. There were lots of laughters following a cheap sense of humor. There were lots of sounds and flashes as they huddled to take memorable photos. I was one of them and part of all the commotion. I did my best and it was one of the best. I strode with pride and spoke with confidence. I got compliments and encouragement. I was welcomed with smiles and admiration. I bowed in respect and replied in courtesy. There were lots of emails and numbers to exchange and invitations to thank and refuse. But something is missing, something genuine is missing: my belief in what I was doing. His speech was long, packed with promises accentuated by the strength in his voice as usual when he wants to drown conflicting ideas. The crowd looked and laughed merrily but I didn’t get it. All I heard over the speakers that bleak afternoon was a profession of some sort of impossible national project. It either takes the talent of a genius to initiate such program or it simply takes a fool with power to spark the plan. In this and many other cases, I side with the latter possibility. “feasible, feasible” he repeated, no fewer than 7 times as I could recall. I believe he was trying to confirm the attainability of this over-ambitious, or fictitious, program but all I heard was more of a vain prayer. If something is born to vanish, it will vanish because it was conceived by hopeless hopes and an ungrounded ambition. The intelligent might be dangerous but the fool with power is even more.
