There were plenty of hokie television shows in the early days of television. (When you look a some of the TV offerings today, you might say that the trend has continued to exist.) Perhaps among the hokiest was the This is Your Life show that lasted from 1952 through 1961 and hosted by Ralph Edwards. (Apparenlty not realizing that Americans had experienced quite enough of it, there was a later incarnation of the show in the 1970s.) The premise was to use some ruse to lure a celebrity to a site near the studio and Ralph Edwards would march around a corner bearing a photo-album-sized book of things, announcing to the celebrity that he/she was the next subject of the show. The celebrity would then be put on a couch and folks from the subjects past would stand behind a curtain and relate some tale their relationship. Usually, this went pretty well but I understand that there were times when the celebrities were not at all pleased to have been selected.
