There were some surprising votes in this parliamentary vote on the motion in support of proportional representation (openparliament.ca/votes/41-2/291/). A plurality of Liberal MPs supported the motion, although this outcome would not have occurred in the absence of the suspension of the two Liberals accused of personal misconduct (Pacetti, Andrews). There were Liberal MPs who represent electoral districts in Montréal (Scarpaleggia, Pacetti (unofficially, due to being suspended from caucus), Dubourg, Garneau) and Toronto (Freeland, Sgro) who voted against the motion and Liberal MPs who represent rural electoral districts (Easter, Brison, Eyking, Cuzner) who voted in favour of the motion. Bélanger (representing a federal electoral district which has not had at least a plurality of votes cast for a candidate other than a Liberal since its creation in 1935 and provincially since 1967) had refused to support proportional representation when asked earlier during this legislative session, and voted in favour of this motion. Brison, being a former Progressive Conservative and representing a rural electoral district, is a particularly unlikely individual to vote in favour of the motion. There was one Conservative who abstained while present (Weston) and one NDP who abstained while present (Cleary). There was one independent MP who voluntarily left his caucus who voted in favour of the motion (Rathgeber).
