There were two brothers; they made their living by farming in the tillage they inherited. One of them was married and the other unmarried. At the end of every harvest, they divided the crops and profit equally. One day, the unmarried brother had a thought: “Dividing the profit and crops equally is not justice. Because I am unmarried and thus my expenses are comparatively less. So, my elder brother has the right to get more share. The next year onwards, after every harvest, he secretly deposited one barrel of grains from his share in his brother’s granary. At the same time, the elder brother was thinking in a different way. “It’s not justice to divide the crop and profit equally. I am married and I have a wife and offspring to take care of me in my senility. But, my brother has no one. The next year onwards, after every harvest, he secretly deposited one barrel of grains from his share in his younger brother’s granary. Years passed by; both of them were equally surprised to find that there is no decrease in their storage, despite the secret act they have been carrying out over the years. One day, they met each other during their secret endeavor. Fallen short for words, they hugged each other. There is no better fortune than owning a selfless mind. That will be the source of all virtues. Such hearts will be pure without the blemishes of jealous, pride, defiance or hatred. Those who live selflessly even amidst the deluge of affluence, will win hearts of many. They will be surrounded with people who supplicate for their wellness. Is there any better fortune than that? Many a times, we come across kinship that are stained by the engrossment of selfishness. As if, one can not withstand the growth and success of another! How many live around us, without stretching their sight or sympathy beyond their own or children’s well off, and puffed up in the stillness of selfishness. No one remembers them, perhaps none says a good word about them. They don’t put aside anything worth to remember in the future to follow. Quran encourages us to give things that we love most. That means, the real charity is the emancipation from the dreadful entanglements of stinginess. Quran says in the chapter 2, verse 177. Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. [2:177]
