There were two notable passages this past week of men who will go down in the annals of Alaska history: Fatal Vision author Joe McGinniss died last Monday at a hospital in Worcester, Mass from complications of prostate cancer and Gordon Samel, a suspected drunken driver, was killed last Sunday night in an officer-initiated shooting. McGinniss is the adventurous and news-making author and reporter who skewered the marketing of Richard Nixon in The Selling of the President 1968 and tracked his personal journey from sympathizer to scourge of convicted killer Jeffrey MacDonald in the blockbuster Fatal Vision. In both cases, he had become fascinated by the difference between public image and private reality. While researching his next book, The Rogue: Searching for the real Sarah Palin, he scored a front-row seat in 2010 when he rented a house next door to her in Wasilla, Alaska. The Palins built a 16 foot fence and threatened to sue but never followed through. At one point, McGinniss said that he feared for his safety, claiming that the current mayor of Wasilla offered him a gun for his own protection. The unauthorized biography was released in September, 2011. Gordon Samel, 52, was among three moose hunters who discovered the body of Christopher McCandless in an abandoned bus on the Stampede Trail near Denali National Park and Preserve in 1992. McCandless was made famous by the book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer and subsequent film, written and directed by Sean Penn. It was Samel who looked inside a window and saw a sleeping bag that appeared to have something in it. He stood on a stump, reached through a window and gave the bag a shake. It would turn out that McCandless had been dead for 2 1/2 weeks. The movie, filmed in Alaska, was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Academy Awards. Tourists who have read the book or seen the movie still trickle in hoping to see that bus. Its still there but more than two decades later, the discovery was not a big topic of conversation for Samel. Hed tell people that he went up there and he found him. But he didnt talk about it much. RIP Joe McGinniss and Gordon Samel.
