Theres a foolproof acid test to understand a politicians motivation: Watch how he/she reacts when you take away (or threaten to take away) his/her power. If his motivation is truly serving the people, then the idea that the people might choose someone else wont bother him that much. But if his reaction is bitterness, namecalling and a sense that something to which he has a property right is being stolen from him, you know immediately that its not about serving the people - Its about the politicians power, prestige and position. Write it down. If the office belongs to the people, they have an absolute right to replace the officeholder. If he does not respect that right, you know he does not understand the basic principle that public officials are servants, employees; and the people are the masters, with the right to hire and fire. If he fails to understand his proper role in that relationship, you know further that he needs to be fired and replaced with someone who respects his boss- the voter.
