Theres a lot here to (metaphorically) chew on. One of the things that this article immediately made me think of: a year or so back, it came out that a bunch of stores had been selling honey that was actually corn syrup with some coloring added. The thread was full of people patting themselves on the back because they would never DREAM of buying honey at a GROCERY STORE, all their honey was single-source bought at farmers markets direct from the producers! (Well, from the farmers. Bees would have a hard time handling the cash.) And thats great and all; I love buying honey from the farmers market. But not everyone has access to a farmers market. And certainly many people dont have access to one year-round. And fundamentally it doesnt matter anyway, because the question at hand was not, where can I buy the tastiest honey, it was, do people have a fundamental right to expect that a jar labeled honey does in fact contain a natural sweetener produced by bees? And the answer to that question should be an unambiguous YES. That is the point of food regulation. If I buy something labeled as honey, it should ACTUALLY BE HONEY, even if Im paying 99 cents for it at a Wal-Mart Supercenter, and to suggest otherwise is bald-faced elitism.
