Theres a rather pointless article in todays Chronicle about a Los Angeles bicyclist who was biking drunk, hit a jogger, and was charged with reckless driving. Convicted, appealed on the basis that bicycles are not vehicles, appeal denied. DUH. Everyone except the jackass and his lawyer knows that bicycles are vehicles under California law. But I did learn a new thing from the article, which is that theres one exception: biking drunk. VC 21200.5 overrides the general vehicular drunk driving laws and specifies a maximum penalty of $250 and no jail time. Woo hoo!
