Theres a reason Im posting this specific performance of Beethoven 7 today. This is a live recording of Leonard Bernsteins final appearance as a conductor anywhere, with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood on August 19th 1990, that is, 24 years and one day ago. Given Marshall Fines passing yesterday, it strikes me as a fitting way to remember my departed friend. Ill most probably post some further music that somehow reminds me of Marshall in the near future, but to begin with, this is the one that seems most appropriate at the moment, especially since I first met him a few days after my first arrival in Memphis in September 1990, just a couple of weeks after this performance, which became the subject of one of the very first conversations I ever had with that perennially astounding man.
