Theres a very important point getting lost in the response to the Puppy Doe tragedy outside of Boston. The dog was allegedly re-homed because the landlord wouldnt allow pit bulls, forcing the family to choose between their dog and their housing. To be clear: Animal cruelty is horrific. And this poor dog ended up suffering in the hands of an alleged abuser. But imagine if Puppy Doe didnt have to be re-homed in the first place? Think of how many dogs die EVERY DAY in the U.S. because their owners couldnt find pet-friendly housing and pet-friendly insurance that didnt discriminate against certain breeds? Theres legislation pending in Massachusetts to prohibit insurance carriers from canceling policies based on a dogs breed. If passed, this bill would save SO many lives by increasing housing opportunities for renters and homeowners alike. Every death is tragic, and the circumstances that surrounded Puppy Does death were inexcusable. That being said, we have opportunity to address the root cause of why too many dogs lose their homes -- dogs like Puppy Doe and countless others. Want to learn more?
