Theres always discussion about how much fast food workers should - TopicsExpress

Theres always discussion about how much fast food workers should be paid. They are, low level jobs and the workers should not expect to paid as well as workers who have more skills. In 1972 McDonalds had about 6 menu items - and special orders were not frequent. Today there are something like 150 menu items and most items are special orders. To handle this, McDonald workers require computer skills. In 1972, the (NYS) minimum wage was $1.85 Today it is $7.25 Taking one of the basic items - a cheeseburger - the price in 1973 was $.20 Today it is $1.29 In 1972 - one hour of minimum wage work would purchase 9 McDonalds Cheeseburgers Today - one hour of minimum wage work will purchase 5 McDonalds Cheeseburgers. A wage is not about the amount of money your employer pays you. It is about the purchasing power of the amount of money your employer pays you. Using this one item (cheeseburger) the purchasing power of the minimum wage has gone down by 40 something percent. This of course is only one item. People buy hundreds of different things to live I would suspect that the cost of living increase over the last 40 years has not gone up exactly the same as the cheeseburger. I do feel safe in saying that the cost of living has not gone down, using any combination of purchases that people make today. Cost of living up --- Minimum wage (purchasing power) down by nearly 50%. Why do some people see that as OK?
