Theres an article going around about Samsung and a new app to help peeps with autism live more meaningful lives by learning how to make eye contact with people who arent autistic (I know, I know). Immediately I was struck by the irony of a Korean company partnering with a special needs organization. Prior to moving to Asia, my ESL students in Toronto told me that disabled people in Korea were generally hidden from the public. In almost a decade of life in Korea, I very rarely saw any (visibly) disabled people although there were bits and pieces of inclusion and accessibility to be found. Occasionally I or my friends taught kids we suspected of having autism or learning disabilities but these ideas were forbidden in the private schools we taught. We talk about how much we loved life there, but not everything was rosy: news.au/world/asia/national-shame-a-living-hell-for-slaves-on-remote-south-korean-islands/story-fnh81fz8-1227173249821
