It sounds so simple: Eliminating feline euthanasia at shelters requires that the intake of healthy cats precisely matches the number released alive. Traditional shelter programs have aimed to keep these two numbers in balance through adoption and preventive programs primarily aimed at pet, rather than un-owned or feral cats (community cats). Adding programs that acknowledge the substantial contribution of community cats to shelter euthanasia radically expands the options to balance feline intake and live outcomes. These options include managed intake and shelter-based Trap/Neuter/Return programs for healthy free-roaming cats. Creating a precise balance between feline intake and live outcomes requires a thoughtful and systematic implementation process. The purpose of the Feline Euthanasia Zero Project, aka the FEZ Project, is to create a forum where shelters can share practical strategies to accomplish these goals. Ultimately our goal is to bring together a set of tools and resources that will allow any shelter, with any budget, to implement a combination of managed intake and TNR to achieve zero euthanasia of healthy cats.
