Theres more than one kind of voting analysis. Theres the kind that predicts and anticipate voting results, and theres the kind that examines why that prior analysis of predictions went wrong (the most frequent and enjoyable type). But theres another kind of foresight we sometimes dont see enough: the analysis of the long picture. If the Republicans enjoy gains in November--and god knows why these reprehensible hijackers of the American dream would--there is also this: It wont matter in the long run. They cant win a federal election (you cant gerrymander the Electoral College, which is one great reason why we should keep it), and they cant push back the change that is now underway in this land. Enlightenment--that is, reason--moves in fits, in starts and hitches. It meets ugly anger and superstition and murderous resistance. But enlightenment is transforming this land, and if it moves too slowly in some ways, it has also accelerated in unexpected and steady ways. Will the Republicans take the Senate in November? I doubt it, but if they do it wont matter. Our children will of course grow up in times that will be difficult and unpredictable, but nonetheless the America they will enjoy and accept as fair-minded is an America that conservatives cant undo or roll back.
