Theres no such thing as a free lunch. Havent we all learned that lesson? Maybe nobody told that to the guy in the White House, or maybe he figures none of us have heard it. How else to explain his new proposal to provide a free community college education to anyone who wants one, with the only requirement being maintenance of a 2.5 G.P.A.? 1. Whos going to pay for it? Who else? The generation its aimed at, our kids and their kids. 2. With federal and state money pouring in, whats to stop community colleges from raising tuition rates and creating unneeded programs and facilities, as do so many 4-year colleges? 3. Will cost-free community colleges distract from the need to create jobs, by parking potential workers in the CCs? 4. If the community college is a freebie, what happens to motivation? Theres no cost for failure and increased competition for the potentially larger number of grads for the same number of jobs. 5. Will it skew the natural job market to jobs requiring an associates degree as opposed to say, jobs requiring trade school certifications? 6. What is the moral justification for spending yet more money on a need for which theres no evidence? 7. Is there a larger agenda in Obamas fake generosity? After all, hes not paying for it, we all are, as well as generations to come.
