Theres not dozens of people now doing what I try to do, not - TopicsExpress

Theres not dozens of people now doing what I try to do, not hundreds, but literally thousands, Pete Seeger told a reporter when asked to reflect on his legacy in 2008. The idea of using music to try to get the world together is now all over the place. It seems cliche these days to try to make the point that music can change the world. When songs like We Shall Overcome, Give Peace a Chance and The Times They Are A Changin can rally thousands behind a cause, it seems obvious. How important was Pete Seeger to American music and politics? You might disagree with his politics, but you cant deny his impact. He raised his voice with the Occupy Wall Street movement and targeted polluters, war, poverty and tyranny. Hitler was one of his early targets. He was the one who changed will to shall in We Shall Overcome. Every kid who ever sat around a campfire singing an old song is indebted in some way to Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie once said. Seeger died early Monday at 94.
