Theres this Diagnosis called OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER. Now think about that for a moment... Does it even exist?...Is there such a thing as an oppositionally defiant child?... we think that once weve made a diagnosis that weve explained something, but we havent explained anything. To call a kid A.D.D. might describe his behaviour, but we havent explained anything. Weve just described a bunch of traits that hes got. Oh yeah, he behaves that way cause hes got A.D.D. What does that mean? NO, A.D.D is just a category that bunches together a bunch of behaviours and symptoms, and calls them a disease; just because we call them a disease doesnt make it such. Somethings going on in the mind of that person. Same with the oppositional child. When we diagnose the child, think of it this way; If my foot was broken right now, would it make any difference to the broken-ness of my bones whether or not I was by myself, or whether others were with me?...It wouldnt make any difference. That foot is broken. Thats a disorder in my foot. The bones are fractured... But could I be oppositional if I was here by myself? Now, if you dont know what Im talking about. When you go home, Lock yourself into a room, make sure you are by yourself and OPPOSE somebody; and if you succeed in doing so, I hope you will video it and put it on youtube, because we all want to see how you oppose somebody when they are not there. In other words, oppositionality by definition implies a relationship. But if oppositionality defines a relationship, then why are we diagnosing the kid?...instead of trying to examine the relationship? Why are we diagnosing and medicating the kid, instead of looking at that childs relationship to the environment? Dr. Gabor Mate
