Theres this Thai restaurant I go to maybe once a week for Swimming Rama (their peanut sauce rocks). The restaurant is converted from a large old house and the owner and family also live there. Every time I show up their 4 year old boy comes charging out from parts unknown to engage me in song. The first time it happened it was Old McDonald. We did a duet and I forgot not only the order in which the animals should be itemized lyrically, but even which animals properly belonged to Mr. McDonalds farm and which did not. So I free styled it and didnt even bother to keep it to animals but instead just said whatever was on the top of my head. This blew that kids mind. Hed never heard anything like it. His experience was that there was one proper way, and that was the only thing he knew. That was his reality. So now, anytime Im around we have to do a song (one song...many repetitions). So today as I was half-way out the door he came charging out from behind some curtains and we launched into one of the numbers from our set-list (Happy Birthday to You). The tempo was slow enough that I was able to turn it into sort of a call and response live mashup: Happy birthday to you (You say its your birthday) Happy birthday to you (Its my birthday to, ya...) etc. This time there was a crowd of diners and they seemed to enjoy and even applauded our performance. This got me thinking.... The kid and I DO harmonize together pretty well. I mean its not quite the Everly Brothers. Right now he only knows like 3 songs but I could teach him some of the classics like Hokey Pokey, Boom, Boom, Aint It Great To Be Crazy?, Froggie Went a Courtin, and One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. I bet before long we could put a set together and do gigs Friday and Saturday night at the Thai Palace. Actually Im pretty sure we could get onto one of those shows, Americas Got Talent, or something like that. Im pretty sure wed be voted off the islands or whatever in the early rounds, but by then wed have already been on national television. Check and mate.
