Theres this erroneous idea floating around out there that just because someone knows how to do something they can teach you or coach you to do it, too. Its just not true. Just because someone is a great player, it doesnt necessarily mean that they can teach someone else to be a great player. In fact, most great players make terrible coaches. Being a great player and being a great coach are rooted in two very different mindsets. Basically it comes down to this: Great players want to win at all costs and hate to lose. Great coaches want to help people develop to their full potential. Another way to say this is that players care about the game and the coach cares about the players. This is a fundamentally different way of thinking about the game. If youre a coach and you care more about the win/loss record than you do about the players, youll never be a great coach.
