There’s a story in the Old Testament that depicts the human condition, and our current societal situation, well. The little band of Israel has turned once again from doing what was right in God’s sight, and true to form, God will not forever resist a human will… He hands them over to the gods they prefer and things go bad. Seven worsening years go by (not a term of punishment for their infractions – but the time it took them to wake up), their enemies have found them defenseless (with no God to stand up for them) and continue to pillage them to the point of utter poverty, and now they’re crying out for help. They thought they were choosing the better system of life experience, the one with the least resistance to their whims, and now they have nothing. When we are up to our waist in worldliness it just slows us down, we don’t want any help, were comfortable swimming with the rest of the fish… When we’re up to our necks and about to die, the crying begins… God sends them a prophet… reminding them of the times of His deliverance… and then calls up a guy named Gideon to go in and get them out. Gideon. He addresses him as, “A mighty man of valor!” A sales pitch? Or foresight? This is another example of God taking a common every day guy and empowering him to do great things. Another example of a lot of hemming and hawing by common everyday people about being worthy, having the proper pedigree, being capable, can’t You find someone else… but ultimately having a heart set on God’s ability to flow thru them… miraculously… Our society is just about “up to its neck” right now. And from every corner, it seems, a cry is rising – not yet, but building, to the levels of fear and anger and confusion. And while there is the prophecy of one man rising, a false prophet who will restore a false worldwide peace, God will be calling up huge numbers of everyday people, enabled by Him, to do great things – great exploits on great adventures of faith: Praying for people in cubicles at work and seeing them delivered from all their fears. Laying hands on the sick and seeing them healed by the power of God. Supernatural words spoken to see courage rise in the meek. Gideon is not the example of the cream of the crop – he is just one more of the 100% God wants to bring online to show His love and mercy to a captive and struggling world. So, how about it? How much hemming and hawing (it means coughing and fumbling – you know, like when we are trying to buy time to find a way out)? God has only great plans for every one of His people and we can choose little ones, tiny plans within the gigantic plan, or we can settle our hearts, say yes to Him and let Him take us on the ride of a life! Remember… God will not forever resist a human will… but never forget… that the moment we sincerely cry out to Him for help, He will come and deliver… It’s a new year – LET HIM DO THRU YOU WHAT HE FORSEES HE CAN IF YOU WILL COOPERATE!
