There’s been a lot of talk lately about what to do about illegal immigration. I don’t understand why, the problem has been around for years and the solution is relatively simple. Since the day our country was founded immigrants have been essential to the success we have enjoyed. Even today it is vital to the health of our economy to welcome these newcomers. Much has change in the last 100 years, we no longer need help building railroads to open new territory and we no longer need trees cleared to establish new farms. Today we compete in a global economy, creativity and entrepreneurship has replaced the pioneer spirit. Ideas and innovation have replaced brute strength and callused hands. We no longer need the tired and poor that Miss Liberty welcomed. Today we need the educated, the talented and the gifted in order to stay competitive with the rest of the world. Instead we have millions who simply walked across the border or overstayed their visas. So, what do we do with all these uninvited guests? Well, first and foremost, the border must be secured to keep any new visitors from entering illegally. People who overstay their visas must understand there are real penalties involved. Then the ones that are here must register with the INS with the understanding that as long as they have a clean criminal background they will be able to stay and follow a path to citizenship, the same path any other new immigrant must follow. Those who don’t register or enter after the registration period has ended will be subject to deportation, jail, or both. I know you’re thinking “that’s just amnesty isn’t it”? Yes, however they are already here and it would be expensive to send them all back where they came from. Splitting families would be a human tragedy that most people would find unpalatable. Once the registration is complete we can determine how many people from each country there are. The INS has quotas that determine the number of people from each country that they will allow to immigrate each year. These quotas will be cut by 50% every year until the number of people cut equal the number of people registered by each country. We need a real head count, many of these illegal’s have been here for over 20 years and they have children and grand children who according to our laws are citizens because they were born here. These children should be counted by treated them like they were part of an immigrating family to keep the quota system at a proper count. Then there is one law that must be repealed, that law is the one that states that any child born here is a citizen. We no longer need this law as there are better ways to get the people we need. Visas for pregnant women should expire a certain period (as determined by the AMA) before the due date. Visiting women who have their baby here must prove through DNA that the father is a citizen or legal immigrant or the baby will be treated as having the same citizenship as its mother. Forward this post to your Senators and Congressmen letting them know that the debate is over, it’s now time to take care of business and get this done once and for all.
