These 2 dramatic videos will hopefully help most people understand what happens when we privilege the consumption from the top of our worlds food pyramid ; it should demonstrate in practice why we are loosing so much potential by feeding animals to eventually become our food, when instead we could simply avoid such redundant conversions, and consume more protein-rich vegetables. Nature has a natural conversion ratio of about 10%, but intensive fish farms for instance have an even more scaringly lower conversion ratio of 2.5%. This means that each time we eat 1kg of biggish wild fish, that cost 10kg of smaller fish (and zooplankton), and worse yet, when we eat 1kg of farmed fish, that cost 50kg of protein potentially taken from our plates in the form of cereals, cheap meat and smaller fish!!! Overfishing is a reality as much devastating as equatorial forests that produce vast amounts of cereals at the cost of our planetary biodiversity, 70% of which are converted into food for the cattle industry. Finally, most of us who were until now so ignorant of the fact that our seas are indeed becoming the planets largest territory scarce in life, should deeply consider that any change of this scenario will not depend on our governments, in fact it must happen inspite of our lax global regulatory policies, or the complexity of our fishery population models; indeed the solution will not come out of our worlds international conventions on fishery resource management! It must begin now, by readapting our food traditions, doing away with false ideas and misleading myths, showing our children we are all, each one of us, stakeholders of our own predicament; we, consumers, are the most powerful modellers of our planets future. Please decrease considerably your intake of animal protein, buy organic and DO NOT support unsustainable practices, or the corporations which thrive on ecosystem destruction to only deliver a good-looking box of mediocre fast food... Thank you! I must say thank you to my friend Claudia Lenzen for bring these two videos to my attention. Thank you all for caring for our planet! part 1 - youtube/watch?v=YP2_8wnj9fI part 2 - youtube/watch?v=eGeogLYVw5Q
