Zebedees is interesting and I quote it in part: When but 17 years of age, he with his brother John walked one hundred miles to enlist in the Union army. He served in Co. C 17th Regiment, W. Va Infantry from Aug. 30th 1864 until the end of the war, and while in the service cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln, and has voted with that party in each and every instance since that time.....Being a man of remarkable strength and endurance his services were much sought by the pioneer residents of his neighborhood in W. Va. and coming to this (Jackson) county, just after the close of the Civil war he found it an almost unbroken wilderness. Thus, new fields of labor were opened to this rugged man. Here in the country which he loved so well, he entered heartily into the tasks that confronted the early settler; such as clearing ground, raising log houses, and making a wilderness bloom with the blessings of civilization.......
