Approximately 8% of Americans over the age of twelve were moderately to severely depressed from 2009 to 2012, according to health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, only about one-third of those suffering from severe depression sought help from a mental health professional. Dr. Simon Rego of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York adds, Clearly much more work needs to be done to educate the public on the symptoms of depression, the major impact it can have on ones functioning, and the benefits of seeking an appropriately trained mental health professional. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, December 2014 Health Alert: Kids Often Exposed to Unneeded Chest X-Rays. A new report indicates that nearly 9 out of 10 children in the United States who receive chest x-rays dont need them. In the study, researchers evaluated the reasoning for taking 637 chest films of children and found that 88% of films did not influence treatment. The researchers hope the findings will help guide clinicians and deter them from ordering unnecessary x-rays that offer no clinical benefit to the patient. Radiological Society of North America, December 2014 Diet: Mediterranean Diet Slows Aging Process. The Mediterranean diet consists of eating fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, nuts, and olive oil. This diet is associated with several health benefits, and now a new study suggests it may help slow the aging process. Researchers studied the diets of nearly 5,000 middle-aged women and found that those whose diets most closely resembled the Mediterranean diet were significantly more likely to have longer telomeres than those whose diets least resembled the Mediterranean diet. Telomeres are structures at the ends of chromosomes that protect genetic information from degrading during cell division. They become shorter over a persons lifetime and are considered a marker for biological aging. Short telomere length has been linked to many age-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. BMJ, December 2014 Exercise: Handle Stress Better. Study participants who underwent a mental stress test after exercising for 30 minutes produced less cortisol (the stress hormone) than participants who did not exercise before taking the same test. Among those who exercised, those who were already physically fit had the lowest measured cortisol responses, suggesting that physical fitness helps individuals better respond to mentally stressful situations. Psychoneuroendocrinology, October 2014 Chiropractic: Spinal Manipulation Reduces Oxidative Stress in Cells! Twenty-three chronic neck or back pain patients received spinal manipulation twice a week for five weeks. Pre- and post-treatment blood tests showed an increase in the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). SOD and GPx have been observed to decrease oxidative stress in cells. Oxidative stress is associated with reduced telomere length, a biomarker of biological aging. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, December 2014 Wellness/Prevention: Can a Vitamin Supplement Prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss? Preventing noise-induced hearing loss may be as easy as taking a vitamin supplement. According to a newly published animal study, oral administration of the chemical nicotinamide riboside (NR - the biologically active coenzyme form of vitamin B3) either before or after exposure to loud noises appears to protect the nerves that innervate the cochlea (the auditory portion of the inner ear). If such results translate to human subjects, this could be a breakthrough as there are a very limited number of treatment options for disorders of the inner ear, including hearing loss.
