These Dead songs from the Radio Music Hall I had a bootleg of when I lived in Indonesia and I learned those last two songs on guitar. I remember I taught my english class the Monkey song to their great delight but I dont think they figured out what it was about. We sure had a good time singing it together! Now this song is so beautiful, one of the most Dead songs ever about their hero and mentor Neal Cassidy. Cassidy was the living version of the archetype James Dean tapped into, an American Westerner for lack of a more factual label. Cassidys legend was legion and well documented in many of Jack Keroaucs books, most noteably On the Road. Best of friends with Allen Ginsburg, both of them spanned two cultural revolutions (well documented in Electric Kool-aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe.) Wonderful lyrics this time not by Robert Hunter, the usual poet who writes gratefully. This is penned by retired Wyoming cattle rancher John Barry Barlow. Some wooden music on the carpet. Faring thee well now. Let your life proceed by its own design. Nothing to tell now. Let the words be yours, Im done with mine. This is what 1980 sounded like.
