These are 8 tips on being a professional fighter from one of the worlds greatest fighters ~Gabriel Varga 1. You’re signing up to be a semi-professional runner. If you aren’t prepared to become a semi-professional runner, you might as well quit. Running is such an important part of the sport. I run 5 days a week and it varies between 50-400 metre sprints all the way to 8km. If youre not running youd better have something else extremely cardiovascular that can substitute for this workout. 2. Boxer Carl Froch says Youd better hope you have a granite chin. To put it simply, there are two sorts of boxer: those with glass jaws, and those with granite chins. If you’ve got a glass jaw, you go down easily and can’t take a big punch. If you’ve got a granite chin, like I have, you’re immovable. It doesn’t matter how skilled you are, or how hard you train, if you aren’t tough enough, you won’t win. You cant teach a strong jaw. If you go down easy being a professional fighter is going to be extra difficult work. 3. Wrap your tools carefully If you punch hard youve got to protect your hands. Be sure not to neglect them with a 30 second wrapping job. And for that matter dont rush through stretching before and after a session. I spend over 30 minutes warming up, stretching, wrapping, and stretching again at the end. 4. Be ready for some serious dieting. Not just fight week but the whole 8 week training camp. If you cant eat healthy youre one step behind someone else who is fuelling their body properly. 5. Look after yourself. Youve got to be able to compete in the ring. Side activities like skiing and motor cycling may have to wait until your career is over. Ive been missing out on many activities over the past 8 years to make sure I dont get injured outside of kickboxing. 6. Grow a thick skin or avoid the internet. If you dont like someone telling you youre going to lose your next fight then stay off the internet. Youll have lots of people supporting you but many who dont believe or want you to win. I choose to stay off chat sights prior to my fights. I just get frustrated with peoples opinions sometimes. But it is that much sweeter when you prove them wrong. 7. Fighters will like movies and T.V. Watching movies and T.V shows in the evening becomes a common occurrence during training camp. You need your rest after two sessions a day and going for a walk in the evening is the last thing you want to do. Recovery is very important and sitting on the couch and taking your mind off the fight is a great way to relax. 8. Respect your opponent Even though were trying to knock our opponents out theres no point in disrespecting them. Theyve worked hard and showed skill to get far enough to fight professionally. And if theyre no good why are you fighting them. Ive always respected each opponent and demonstrate it by making sure I train harder than them.
