These are screen captures from a video I was making Thanksgiving 2014, but I decided that I shouldnt go full-video if Im this fat, ugly, and unshaven. Anyhoo--Arizona wine. This vintner is Dos Cabezas in Sonoita (dont pronounce every syllable...make the oi like oy!) with grapes from Willcox, 60 miles away in a different county. Arizona wines are pretty good right now, but in another decade or two, that area between Willcox and Sonoita will RULE the continent. Sonoita is the official AVA (domain), but the winemakers are trippin on Willcox. The oldest tap roots in Arizona are hardly 25. I expect they can stretch another couple of feet deeper in the next decade or two. Older vines are going to pull up some very interesting terroir from southern Arizona. I think that a couple of the best grapes to reflect that are the cabernet franc and the sauvignon blanc, with DNA that goes to Bordeaux (I think). This is a tempranillo Im decanting. I recanted it Thursday night because we burned ourselves out on one bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau that I almost refused to drink, but surprised me at how it mellowed later Wednesday night. If you dont like red wines, tempranillo is the grape to try. Its the basis for Spanish standards. Its easy drinking and right in the center. So the point here is: Lets anticipate Arizonas winery domination. I fear the worst, which is that in just a few short years, stretch limos full of 20-something, Axe- and bubblegum-perfumed kiddies LOUDLY cramming the tasting rooms will be glub-glubbing big liquid fruit and getting louder and stinkier. I urge you to take your grandchildren now, and start teaching them etiquette, manners, and ... composure. Thanks!
