These are some of the pics I took yesterday at the Richard Wright elementary school in North Philly. Bonnie Cohen Koss invited me to tag along when she donated the items from her fundraiser last Friday. After the donations were made, we took a tour of the school. The murals on the walls are magnificent street art and brighten the space as best as they can with minimal natural light. The children.... are children. Just like my children. They high-five the same after helping them tie their shoes in the hallway. The only thing that separates them from our cushy suburban existence is cruddy happenstance. The Hesses are notorious book people. All four of my babies walk around with their noses in books constantly bumping into things. I was keenly interested in their library. To get to it we walked past the steel grates (!!) into an albeit clean but barren room. Underwhelming is an overstatement. The shelves were empty. The science section and the stories for and about girls were completely bare. It was hard to fight back the tears standing there. When I got home we had a family meeting of sorts over the rolling out of the paratha for Divali dinner. (Im not sure if they agreed but in my head they did so Ill just run with it. Michael Hess may be unaware that that even counted as a family meeting.) So heres what the Traveling Zoo is going to do about it: We will be The Book Collectors. If you have any K-5 books that you are willing to donate, please inbox me. If we dont know each other personally, but you happen to find out about this project, talk to me about it anyway. Inbox me, stop me on the street -- doesnt matter! Im always open to speaking to anyone! Please. ALL help, big or small would be greatly appreciated.
