These are the messages I get from my mom: I finished River of Dark Dreams. That was a heavy book would kind of have to be read more than once to absorb it all, but I had it on interlibrary loan and had to turn it back in. Hes not an easy read, thats for sure! But it was fascinating. Im surprised in a way, though, that you thought it was two books. I thought the second part was the logical extension of his theory that slavery (as conceived of by those who were running it) had to be imperial to survive. So the whole political part about all the adventures in Cuba and Nicaragua, etc., were quite the logical sequence to the first part - in my view, anyway. But I know you get annoyed by all things political, though you might have to tamper down that tendency just a little bit if you want to be a good historian - even though I know you love the cultural things much more. But its all a package, you know, and that part cant always be ignored. Oh well, conversation for another day.
