These are the not-yet-approved minutes from the last HMS PTA meeting: Huntington Middle School PTA Minutes for Sept. 10, 2013 meeting IN ATTENDANCE: Susan Korstanje , Greta Jackson, Jill Winters, Mitzi Payne, Hannah Burbery, Faye Suer, Joe Brison, Whitney George, Grace Gooding, Robin Johnson, Mark Graham, Monica Young , Jeannette Hornbuckle, Dave Lavender and El-Shazly OFFICERS REPORT: In the treasurer’s report, Susan Korstanje reported that there was an ending balance of $4,164.67. The previous balance was $3,979.67. There was a total of $385 from two Kroger/PTA Sign ups in August, and a withdrawal of $200 to pay for the Kroger cards. Korstanje reported that all of the Kroger cards were in use and asked if more should be ordered. The group thought another dozen cards would be good to order. Lavender made a motion to purchase the cards and Jackson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Monica Young , VP, reported about the HMS Book Fair, which was set for Sept. 16-20 and sent around a volunteer sheet to get workers as well as volunteers for set up and pack up. In talks about the Scholastic Book Fair, Suer made a motion that the school again opt for Scholastic bucks instead of cash that would be doled out to the librarian as well as reading teachers. Young seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS: The PTA voted on adding John Sutherland to the Local Schools Improvement Council. Suer made a motion to accept Sutherland. Gooding seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Already on that council is Maribeth Anderson and Bill and Lisa Rawlinson. Principal Brison explained further what the LSIC does. Gooding asked that if the LSIC meets, that one of the members report back to the PTA what happened and how the PTA might be able to help those efforts. NEW BUSINESS: Parent Robin Johnson sparked a discussion about what it means to be a Title 1 school, which Principal Brison explained. Johnson, who said she has a struggling student, was also given suggestions for intervening, and working with teachers to help the student. Per that discussion Young said the PTA would look into several things: Helping parents understand the results of WESTEST, helping parents understand the core curriculum abbreviations, and would talk to the Title 1/Parent Partner to see if they can’t put some of that info and other helpful parent tips into a newsletter. Also in new business, Brison discussed the fact that RESA members were coming Oct. 3 to conduct surveys with 16 varying stakeholders. Brison asked the PTA to provide refreshments for the RESA diagnostic team. Also in new biz, Young said they will draw at the end of the month for the backpack of supplies giveaway. The date for the October PTA meeting was set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8.
