These are the unwanted refugees whose lives our governments and some people here make so hard. I wonder if, after watching this, anybody could not want to open their arms wide and hug them in a warm, compassionate welcome. Many of our families were refugees, too, arriving here only with their lives, when they were chased out of the east by the Russian army. They were being bombed from above on the way, they walked and tried to keep the kids alive...and when they arrived here in the parts of Germany that were mostly rural and not so much touched by the war, when they arrived undernourrished, dirty, exhausted, raped and traumatized, most of the rural population here treated them like gypsies, low-class, in short: not worth living. They looked down on them though many of the refugees were even much better educated than them. My own parents came here as children and underwent such a treatment that has left its traces till today. - Now, how can anybody of us not welcome these fellow-men who are reliving our own history, who have gone through a trauma that they will have to digest for the rest of their lives? I wonder at humanity. Recently there has been a discussion about what to do with the additional tax that our country has been raising till today in order to build up the east of Germany after the wall came down (the solidarity tax, called the soli). Our governments would like to keep it and finance communities whose household is a bit low. - To be honest, I would like to keep the idea of solidarity, the idea of helping people build up a new life. It would make me happy if this tax payed for a comprehensive support of refugees who come here. It would make me feel better about myself, it would relieve me. I cant just go on watching this misery without being able to give help, and I mean, substantial help, not just a couple of euros at Christmas out of an emotional Christmas carol mood.
