These days for notable birthdays and events, people sometimes go and have big city celebrations and sometimes even journey to foreign climes to make their 21st birthday or stag / hen night more memorable. For me, I spent my 18th birthday doing Final Fling in the heart of the Brecon Beacons for at that time I was in Basic Training for the Army. Though it was memorable, it wasnt really what you would call enjoyable. However, the British Army heard of my disgruntlement, and with it being the kind and considerate employer that it was, decided to make my 21st birthday really special in some sort of recompense for the disappointing events of my 18th. After putting me on a plane and a cruise ship for the best part of a fortnight, I ended up, with quite a number of my mates at the holiday destination with a few days to go before my milestone birthday. The place itself was small and a bit ramshackle, and the accommodation was basic and a tad cramped and facilities were limited to say the least, but it had a beach and was surrounded by lots of countryside and varied wildlife, and the natives were friendly. It was to become my home for the next few months. Yes my friends, 30 years ago this very day, Halloween, October 31st 1984, the bastards had dumped us on the Falkland Islands. Oh what fun we had!
