These days we celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Aikhal kimberlite pipe which was discovered on 22 January,1960. As the pipe was found by geologists during the most severe month, they decided to name it January. But such name didn’t take root. Sergey Zverev, Yakut narrator of epic tales, proposed a new name for the pipe – Aikhal. In Yakut language it means Glory. The Aikhal open-pit mine was closed in 1997 and the decision was made to start the underground mining. In 2013, the Aikhal underground mine reached its full capacity of 0.5 million tons of ore per year.
