Please share far and wide! 3 Great Ecological Farmers of Ontario Workshops Before the Guelph Organic Conference! Thursday January 29, Guelph https://efao.ca/ Labour on the Market Garden (10am – 3:30pm) Managing labour is a critical skill for most market gardeners, and one for which farmers rarely receive training or support. Join a panel of market gardeners with different labour strategies (e.g. employees, seasonal workers, business partners, interns, volunteers) to learn about their approaches, tools and techniques for tackling labour issues on their farm. Topics will include: - Matching farm needs to develop a labour strategy - Recruitment and hiring - Training and motivation - Communication tools and techniques - Legal requirement for agricultural employees - Work-life balance Cost: Member $65, Non-member $80 Pastured Pigs (9am – noon) Join Tarrah Young of Green Being Farm as she shares lessons from her own experiences raising heritage pigs on pasture, as well as innovative and valuable information gleaned from research abroad. Topics to be covered include feeding and grazing options, natural health care, farrowing, breed selection, processing, marketing and economics. Plus, get a chance to learn about her herd of the first Kune Kunes in Canada, a small, rare breed of pig able to fatten on forages alone – the true enviro-pig! Cost: Member $45, Non-member $65 Holistic Grazing (1:15pm – 4:15pm) During this workshop, with Tony McQuail from Meeting Place Organic Farm, time will be allocated to a presentation on holistic farm design, a demonstration of fencing materials, and hands-on instruction on how to apply this information to your individual situation. Please bring a map of your farm, and be prepared to share some details on your grazing plan, or what you plan to graze. This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to learn more about proper pasture rotation, grazing mixed livestock, fencing options on various terrain, how to begin to develop a grazing plan, and how to use grazing as a “tool” to create a desired landscape.
