These four were standing in the middle of Utah Highway 21 on my way back to Beaver this afternoon. That is the Indian Peak Range in the background, so these are Sulfur Herd animals - named after Sulfur Springs up in the mountains. This herd is famous for its Spanish Barb genetics. They are the descendants of escapees from the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition that came through this area in 1776 when it was still part of New Spain. The Fathers were traveling The Old Spanish Trail from the Mission at Taos to Monterrey in Alta California. At first I thought they were all mares, but the buckskin that is driving the herd in the last pic has a nice thick neck - standard for a stallion. And the black mare is the lead. It was very strange to see them down this far out of the hills this time of year. I thought maybe they were eating themselves off their normal range, but these animals all look very healthy. Nice shiny coats and round bellies. No idea why they were this far down onto the pediment out of cover....... Beautiful sight ;)
