These guys have the winter camping hookup supreme. A combination - TopicsExpress

These guys have the winter camping hookup supreme. A combination of Kochanskis super shelter techniques and the use of common reed for insulation. IMO, common reed is a far superior material to spruce boughs or oak leaves for insulation. Its easier to gather, too. If you want an instant warm seat next to a fire grab an armful of common reed. Common reed stands are also an excellent place to get out of the brutal wind while having a warm seat. In thick stands, you can pull some over your head, too. If you have the right gear on, you can sleep right there without fire in a spot that took you a couple minutes to make. Done it many times. Its great stuff! Just make sure to wear leather gloves when harvesting them. When they split, the edges are sharper than razor blades. You will feel your blood before you feel the cut. Been there and done that, too. Also be careful to not walk against the grain in these stands. Its a good way to poke an eye. If you have to break trail in them, dont plan on returning on the same trail against the grain. Deer also love to winter in these stands. They will make deer runs in them. Those runs make good ambush hunting opportunities with a spear. Muskrat like to make lodges in the middle of these stands if there is an opening of water there. Muskrats have incorporated this plant as a staple food source even though it is an invasive plant. Many of the old muskrat trappers are not aware of this change. The leaves and tops of these make good fire tender. This plant and its rhizomes are also a wild edible. This stuff grows all around the states. I dont see many bushcrafters even speaking of it. https://youtube/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zQODITeWBHc
