Vijay Singh,TNN | Nov 29, 2013, 06.57AM IST ROHA (RAIGAD DISTRICT): A tragic accident in Roha taluka of Raigad district, where three members of a family were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a state transport bus, has highlighted the poor accident response measures and insensitivity of the public at large. The victims—Mangesh Gaikwad (40), his wife Aparna (30) and their five-year-old son Om—were lying in a critical state for over an hour on the road on Wednesday morning but passersby chose to turn a blind eye. The accused ST bus driver, Shivaji Thombre (38), simply rushed to Roha police station to report about the head-on collision. Thombre was released on bail by the local court on Thursday. While Mangesh and his wife succumbed to their injuries at the spot, their son Om was crying next to his dead parents for nearly an hour. While the state transport bus driver went to the police station without them, the other passersby simply looked on at the crying boy, said the victims cousin brother, Manoj Sankure (37) at Chanera village in Roha taluka. Little Om also succumbed to his injuries before any help could arrive. Some locals later told us that the boy was crying paani, paani (water) but no one had the sense to even give the boy water or any basic first aid. We are shattered by their death, added the cousin brother. Mangesh was a small-time merchant dealing with wooden artefacts which he sold in the main town market. He also used to dabble as a professional driver to support his wife, aged mother and three children. His two daughters Apurva (12) and Anisha (10) are traumatised. The accident took place at 5.45am on Wednesday. While the accused ST bus driver (Thombre) immediately came to police station to report the matter, he did not offer to take the victims to the hospital, said a police officer. API Sunil Solse added: The reason given by the ST bus driver was that the on-duty lady conductor was pregnant. And so he decided to first approach the police. He was booked under IPC sections 304A, 279, 337, 338 and Motor Vehicles Act 184 for rash and negligent driving. Meanwhile, relatives of the victims hope that the state transport department at least offers them a compensation to take care of the surviving members. The two daughters of Mangesh and his old mother, Shantabai Gaikwad, were solely dependent of him.
