JERSEY SHORE — A district judge denied a motion Wednesday to reduce bail for five members of Marcellus Shale Earth First who were arrested last week for blocking a road leading to natural gas wells in Lycoming County. Lycoming County Assistant District Attorney Melissa Kalus argued against any reduction noting the five had participated in other protests and refused to disperse upon state police orders. Intelligence indicates the group expects to remain in the area and plans to build tree stands at the site of potential well pads from which to protest, state Trooper James Wool testified before District Judge Jerry Leply. Leply denied the bail reduction despite each defendant promising not to break the law or engage in civil disobedience if they were released from jail.
