These photos are of a steel miniature billiard table made by Burroughs and watts. My great grandfather Thomas Henry Phillips, worked as a billiard table maker in the early 1900s. He grew up at 42 lower ormond street, c.on.m. His father, uncle and grandfather all worked in a tin case packing company, and they all had servants. Thomas Henry and his siblings were the result of his father getting one of the servants pregnant, the servant stayed on in the house and took the Phillips name, I cannot find any evidence of them marrying, she already had two children from two different fathers who also took the Phillips name. This must have been a large property as, as well as 6 of them, there was a servant and 5 boarders.Other addresses occupied by this family were 22 Edward street, c.on.m, 52 Thomas street, 28 ducie street, blossom street c.on.m, welbeck street, c.on.m, 66 booth street, c.on.m, 13 Cheltenham place c.on.m. To name a few. Thomass uncle ended up poorer in lodgings, one of his aunties violetta Cookson was on poor rate assessments and ended up in the workhouse. Would be intersted to know if anyone knows about the houses on lower ormond street, and ducie street and why they may have had servants.
