These pictures have been taken at Soiteng, Lasjan, yesterday on September 23. There were no casualities in the locality, fortunately. However, all kuccha houses have suffered damage. While some houses have collapsed, there are many others which are not fit to live in. I met a woman with 5 children whose husband had died last year. It looked as though somebody had put gobs upon gobs of mud mixture inside all the rooms of her house. She now lives in a tin shed in deplorable conditions. Another woman thanked me for having paid her a visit. According to her, I was the first person from outside to have seen the extensive damage done to her house by the devastating floods. There was mud mixture lying in all the rooms of her house, the heaps of which were spread over the stairs too. And when I tried to take the stairs, she cried and asked me not to go upstairs as the ceiling could crash down any moment. Some officials from the State Government had come to the area for an assessment, she said, however they refused to enter my house saying that my house wasnt among the fully damaged ones. And when I opened another gate, I saw a man, in his late forties, whose face emanated fury, hopelessness, and agony at the same time. There was a tin-trunk loaded with clothes in front of him, and some utensils, and household items on the left side of it, all soaked in muddy waters. His house which stood in front of me, coloured in a light purple shade had collapsed from inside. The door couldnt be opened despite several attempts. Through the windows, I saw the joy of the family buried under the mud. He said to me, We ran for our lives when the ceiling started to shake, we couldnt save anything else. I never knew I was so strong. To hear and see the pain and then smile again as though I hadnt seen anything. -Taha Mirani, community correspondent, Srinagar district, #Kashmir #JKFloodRelief #KashmirFloodRelief #KashmirFloods
