These pictures show the latest iteration of my attempts to re-create something that never existed. The something in question is a medieval portable forge. When I first built it 2 or 3 decades ago I did a bit of research to find out what such a thing looked like and how it was constructed. I came up with an absolute zero on documentation. I finally realized that it is far too easy to build a forge out of materials at hand to justify the expense and work of lugging one around. All one needs is a hole in mineral soil. The bellows was another matter, and such would probably have been transported. But I don’t believe there were any portable forges, a portable forge is a purely modern concept. That being said, most places that we camp in the SCA and with other re-enactment groups don’t care to have holes dug and fires placed in said holes. So I built this forge with roughly medieval techniques so that I could do forging with something resembling medieval techniques at the events that I attended. It IS a whole lot closer that propane.
