These thoughts are distracting me from my homework: We live in an age of astounding technology that allows us to travel the world, cure disease, choose our food, and access endless information on the fly. Yet, there are a significant number of people who are born into this world without these luxuries. Whose experience of life on this Earth is considerably different from our own. In this current era of human existence, we (and other affluent nations) have the ability to make truly massive impacts and drastic positive changes to the lives of our fellow human beings. We have it within us to, in some way, help those who have nothing. People whose daily goal for survival is to obtain drinkable water and maybe if they are lucky, some food. Who were the unfortunate recipients of the 7 billion to have been born in abject poverty and utter misery. They are in a sense, right next door to us, and we dont even notice them. We share this wonderful planet with all peoples and all life forms. Our species has only had the pleasure of existing in this vast universe, on the only mote of dust within sight capable of supporting life, for such an infinitesimally short period of time in the cosmic context. How lucky are we to have the opportunity to experience consciousness on such a beautiful planet, suspended in an incomprehensibly immense universe. What actions will bring you happiness and fulfillment as you age? What memories will bring you joy in your final moments? Will we contribute in some way to the betterment of mankind? What are the contributions that will give meaning to our existence in this brief lifespan on Earth? How will our progress be measured by those looking back on us in their history sources? This brief moment of consciousness is a cosmic gift. We are an emergent product of time and complexity. We must recognize, understand and respect the diversity of life around us.
